Microplastic contamination profile in the water of Betania Reservoir, Huila Department, Colombia

Resumen

La contaminación por plásticos en los ecosistemas acuáticos representa un grave riesgo ambiental, ya que su acumulación en cuerpos de agua afecta a los organismos y puede altera el equilibrio ecológico. Este estudio investiga la contaminación por microplásticos en el agua del Embalse de Betania, Colombia. Se realizaron muestreos a tres profundidades (superficie, medio y fondo), en 12 estaciones, durante las épocas de aguas bajas y aguas altas, para analizar la abundancia, las características y la distribución vertical y horizontal de los microplásticos. La abundancia en la temporada de aguas bajas fue mayor que en la temporada de aguas altas. Se observó un gradiente decreciente de abundancia de microplásticos hacia zonas más profundas y cercanas a las compuertas del embalse, con una mayor abundancia cerca de áreas más pobladas. Los fragmentos y fibras fueron los más frecuentes, respectivamente, seguidos de películas y las esferas. Este estudio proporciona una línea base para estudiar los patrones de distribución de los microplásticos en el embalse y sus posibles fuentes, lo cual, permitirá realizar investigaciones sobre las interacciones ecológicas de los microplásticos en este ecosistema.
